FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Early hole too much
for Lions and Southern falls 67-48 at Central Missouri
Warrensburg, Mo. - Despite career highs from India Wood (Decatur, Ala.) and Ela Zawadka (Torun, Poland), the Missouri Southern Lions dropped a tough game on the road tonight, losing 67-48 at Central Missouri. Southern (12-11, 5-10 MIAA) scored the game's first basket on a layup from Robin Kantin (Silver Spring, Md.) just 30 seconds in. A three from the Jennies' Ashley Millham gave Central (14-9, 7-7 MIAA) a 12-8 lead with 13:51 left and another bomb from Stephenie Cook gave the Jennies a 20-13 lead with 8:27 left, forcing a Southern timeout. The Lions were down by as many as 11 (32-21) with 2:56 to go, but went on a 4-0 run to end the half thanks to free throws from Wood and a driving layup from Zawadka that made the halftime score, 32-25 in favor of Central. Tynesha Pierce (Houston, Texas) had eight points and five rebounds at the break for the Lions. After Fatai Hala'Api'Api (Lahaina, Hawaii) hit a layup to begin the second half that brought Southern within five, Central Missouri ripped of a 15-4 run that was capped off by a layup from Ashley Millham after a defensive lapse gave the Jennies a three on a fast break. Southern was able to trim the Central lead down to 13 on two occasions, but layups from Lindsey Maple and Megan Fromm thwarted the Lions' comeback attempts each time. With 7:25 left to go, the Central lead was 19 (61-42), but neither team scored a basket for the next four minutes until two free throws from Central's Megan Schoenfeld made the Jennies' lead 63-42. Southern went without a basket for more than six minutes, but a free throw from Wood broke the scoreless streak and a layup from the sophomore on the next trip down with 2:25 left gave the Lions their first basket since the 9:48 mark. A three from Zawadka with 1:54 left made the score 65-48. Zawadka finished with 15 points on 6-14 shooting to lead Southern in scoring. Wood scored 10 and added three assists, going 4-6 from the free throw line. Pierce went 4-9 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line, scoring 10 points. The Lions shot 18-of-42 (34.6 percent), while the Jennies hit 21-of-44 (47.7 percent) of their field goal attempts, including a blazing 52.2 percent (12-of-23) in the second half. The Lions will remain on the road for their next outing with a date in Maryville, Mo. against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Southern will be looking for the season split against Northwest after falling 66-61 to the Bearcats earlier in the year in Joplin.
