FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lions dig early
hole and can't recover, falling 81-50 at 5th ranked Washburn Topeka, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Lions fell behind 17-2 early on and couldn't get back in the game, and fell on the road 81-50 at 5th ranked Washburn tonight in Topeka. After being down by 15 early in the first half, Southern (10-9, 3-8 MIAA) went on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to nine (19-10) with 9:24 left. Washburn (18-2, 9-2 MIAA), however, turned around and used an 8-2 run of its own to extend it's lead to 18 (30-12) just three minutes later. The Lady Blues would lead by 22 at the half. Southern, defensively, held Washburn to just 41 percent from the field in the half, but seven threes from the Lady Blues was the difference. With the Washburn lead at 25 (49-24) just two minutes into the second half, Southern came back with a 15-2 run capped off by a jumper from Ela Zawadka (Torun, Poland) on the right side to cut the deficit to 12 at 51-29. But just as they did on the Lion's previous run, the Lady Blues answered back with another run of their own, this time 13-4, and just like that, the lead was again 23 (66-43) with eight minutes to play. Southern would get as close as 19 after a three from Danielle DeVader (Holton, Kan.) with just under six minutes left. Dana-Mae Robbs (Lecompton, Kan.) led the Lions with nine points. It was the first time in coach Maryann Mitts' tenure at Southern that the Lions have failed to produce a scorer in double-figures. Zawadka added eight points and five others scored six. Southern held their own offensively against the Lady Blues shooting 44 percent to Washburn's 47, but 11 Lady Blue threes and 25 turnovers from the Lions spelled Southern's demise. The 25 turnovers led to 32 Washburn points. Southern will be back in action Saturday when they head to Fort Hays for a 3 pm tipoff. |
