Lions move to 2-0 with
73-53 win over Paul Quinn

Pittsburg, Kan.. - The Missouri
Southern Lions improved to 2-0 by defeating the Paul Quinn Lady Tigers
73-53 to wrap up action at the Pitt State Chatters/Comfort Inn Classic
Sunday afternoon (Nov. 16).
India Wood led four Lions in double-figures with 17, while freshman
Michelle Hedgecock scored 16. Danielle DeVader had another strong outing
with 13 points and made 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Nichole Helfrich
added 10 and had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Wood scored the first seven points of the contest as the Lions jumped
out to an early 9-2 lead. Deveney Guillory answered for the Lady Tigers
by scoring the next six points to cut the Lion lead to one with 11:34
left in the first half.
The Lions opened up a double-digit lead with an 11-2 run and then
expanded the lead to 17 as Michelle Hedgecock scored six points to spark
a 12-4 spurt that put Southern up 32-15 with 2:23 remaining in the
opening half.
The Lady Tigers stayed alive by closing out the half on a 9-0 to trim
the Lion lead to 32-24 at the break.
But Southern would then regain command by opening the second half on a
13-5 run to lead 45-29 with 12:35 left.
The Lions built the lead as high as 23 and maintained at least a
12-point advantage the rest of the way.
A big key to the Lion victory was a 51-32 rebounding edge, including a
26-13 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Lions' defensive effort also held the Lady Tigers to only a 23.5
percent (4-of-17) shooting clip from three-point distance.
Tarneshia Burns and Ashley Williams each scored 11 to pace the Lady
Tigers.
Next up for the Lions will be their home opener against Northeastern
State on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 22) at 1 p.m. |
