Javelinas' Second Half Run Lifts Texas A&M Kingsville over Lions, 62-60

Kingsville, Texas  - The Missouri Southern basketball team led by as many as 14 points tonight at Texas A&M Kingsville, but an 18-10 run cut the Southern lead to just six at the half and two free-throws with a little more than a second remaining lifted the Javelinas over the Lions, 62-60.

Southern (7-2) led 24-10 with eight minutes to go in the first half after a three from India Wood gave the Lions a 14 point lead. Two free-throws from Kingsville's (5-4) Ursala Hill in the final seconds of the first half cut the Lions lead to just six at the break.

The Lions shot the ball well in the half with 42 percent from the floor and 44 percent from long range. Southern made 89 percent (8-9) of its free-throws in the half. The Lions' defense was also stellar in the half, limiting the Javelinas to just 32 percent from the field and 16 percent from long range. However, Kingsville made 10-11 from the charity stripe to keep the game close.

The Lions led by nine (43-34) with 15 minutes left in the second half after a jumper from Randi Henderson. A layup from the Javelina's Angela Franklin capped a 5-0 run for Kingsville that made the score 43-39 with 13 minutes left to play.

The Javelinas tied the score just three minutes later after the Lions' bench was hit with a technical and a free throw from Felicia Soza knotted the game at 43. Kingsville would run its lead to four, three more times in the half, the last time with just under four minutes left (60-57), but a layup from Lindsey Davis and a free throw from Nichole Helfrich tied the score at 60 with 29 seconds to go. The Javelinas' Kayla Naylor then made two free throws with just more than a second left to secure the win.

Davis led the Lions with 15 points and nine rebounds, playing in 35 minutes of the contest. She was 7-8 from the free-throw line. Wood and Myosha Barnes scored 12 and 10, respectively, both going an identical 4-8 from the field.

The Lions shot 42 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line. The difference, however, was in free-throw shooting. Kingsville shot 18-21 from the charity stripe, including a perfect 7-7 in the final five minutes of the game.

The Lions will get back into the MIAA as they head out on the road for a Monday night game at Southwest Baptist on December 29 at 5:30 pm in Bolivar.
