Davis, Hedgecock key Lion exhibition win over Living the Dream

Joplin, Mo. - Senior Lindsey Davis and freshman Michelle Hedgecock each posted a double-double to lead the Missouri Southern Lions to a 77-65 exhibition victory over Living the Dream Friday night (Nov. 7) at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Davis scored 11 points and had a team-high 11 rebounds, while Hedgecock scored 16 and grabbed 10 boards.

Davis scored four early points as the Lions led 11-4 and then made a layup to help the Lions extend the advantage to double-digits at 22-11 with 9:14 remaining in the first half.

Former Lion Ashley Birch helped LTD climb back by scoring six points to key a 15-9 spurt that pulled LTD to within 31-26 with 2:58 left in the opening half.

The Lions then scored six straight, including a jumper from Myosha Barnes with five seconds left for a 37-26 lead the break.

The Lions maintained the lead throughout the second half, as the closest LTD came was six points after a free throw from Ebony Haliburton made it 44-38 with 14:29 remaining in the contest.

Southern quickly stretched the lead back to double-figures and led 51-40 after an India Wood layup with 11:24 left.

Hedgecock gave the Lions their biggest lead of the night with a layup that made it 65-50 with 6:47 remaining.

Wood led the Lions with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range.  Barnes also scored in double-figures and finished with 13.  Tia Evenson dished out a team-high five assists.

Birch led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-13 from the floor, while also finishing with a team-high 11 rebounds.  Another former Lion, Liz Burks scored nine and had a team-best five assists.

A big key to the Lion win was a huge advantage on the boards, as the out-rebounded LTD 48-32 overall and 21-8 on the offensive glass.

The Lions will officially begin the 2008-09 campaign at the Pittsburg State Classic against Southwestern (Kan.) on Saturday night (Nov. 15) at 5:30 p.m.  The Lions will also play Paul Quinn (Texas) on Sunday (Nov. 16) at 1 p.m.
