Lions announce final early signing with junior college guard

Joplin, Mo.
- Missouri Southern women's basketball coach Maryann Mitts has announced the signing of junior college transfer Jolea Apon to a national letter of intent to attend Southern and play basketball beginning in the fall of 2008.

Apon is a 5-9 guard from Springdale, Arkansas. She is a transfer from Carl Albert State College in Oklahoma where she has been a starter for the Vikings for the past two seasons. Last season, she averaged 12.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, including 67 threes.

This year, Apon was a preseason All-Conference pick, and has helped the Vikings to a 4-2 record to start the season, averaging 16.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. She is shooting 49 percent from the field and 33 percent from long range, while draining all six free-throws she's attempted.

Originally out of Springdale High School, Apon enrolled at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., before transferring to Carl Albert.

A four year starter at guard for coach Sandy Wright at Springdale, Apon was an All-Conference and All-State selection for the Bulldogs. She was also a four-year starter at outside hitter for the volleyball team.

"Jolea is a player we have watched since her high school days at Springdale (AR)," Mitts said. "She is a combo guard who has the ball handling skills of a point guard, but is the scorer we want at our other guard positions. She is extremely athletic and has the ability to hit the long range three and be able to finish all the way to the basket. Next season, she will provide us with an immediate boost on the offensive end of the floor."

Apon plans to major in Health Promotion and Wellness at Southern and is the daughter of Dennis and Paula Apon.
