No. 20 Emporia State Emporia, Kan.-- Michelle Stueve and Ida Edwards combined to score 42 points to lead the No. 20-ranked Emporia State Lady Hornets to a 79-46 win over the Missouri Southern Lions Wednesday night (Feb. 13) at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. After Tynesha Pierce scored the first basket of the game for the Lions, the Lady Hornets surged to an 11-2 lead just 3:53 into the contest. Stueve and Edwards combined for eight points during that stretch and Andrea Leiker capped it with a three-pointer. The Lions fought back with a 9-0 run of their own led by four from Ivaney Marquez as India Wood converted a three-point opportunity to pull Southern even at 11-11 with 13:24 left in the first half. But it was all downhill from their as ESU (17-5, 10-3 MIAA) held the Lions to only one field-goal and exploded for a 23-4 run over the next 12:34 to surge ahead 34-15 with 2:50 remaining in the opening half. Stueve and Edwards again were the leaders of the charge, teaming up for 14 of the 23 points during that span. The Lady Hornets went on to lead 38-17 at the half. The Lions (16-6, 7-6 MIAA) were hurt during the deciding first half by 14 turnovers and shot only 25 percent (7-of-28) and 0-of-6 from three-point distance. Meanwhile, the Lady Hornets connected on 53.6 percent (15-of-28) of their field-goal attempts in the opening half. ESU kept the momentum going in the opening minutes of the second half as Edwards scored four points to lead a 6-0 run that gave the Lady Hornets a 44-17 advantage. The Lions scored the next four points and then climbed to within 46-24 after a successful three-point attempt by Danielle DeVader with 15:20 left. But that is as close as the Lions could come in the second half as the Lady Hornets scored seven straight to take a 29-point lead and never allowed the Lions closer than 24 from that point. Wood was the lone Lion in double-figures with 10 points. DeVader and Fatai Hala'Api'Api each scored seven. Marquez grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Stueve, the MIAA's all-time leading scorer, led the way for the Lady Hornets with a game-high 22 and made all eight of her free-throw attempts. Edwards scored 20 and led ESU with six boards. The Lions will next play an important MIAA road contest at Southwest Baptist on Saturday night (Feb. 16). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo. Southern squeaked out a 58-55 win over SBU in their first meeting earlier this season (Jan. 19) in Joplin.
