Lions dominant in exhibition win over Living the Dream, 74-49

Joplin, Mo. - Tynesha Pierce (Houston, Texas) led five Lions in double-figures as Missouri Southern rolled to a 74-49 exhibition win over Living the Dream Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10) at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

With the score tied at 9-9 with 13:36 left in the first half, a jumper by Pierce gave the Lions the lead for good and started a 7-1 spurt that gave Southern a 16-10 lead.

Living the Dream scored the next four points to come within two, but Robin Kantin (Silver Spring, Md.) scored eight points to key a 21-2 Lions explosion over the next 7:44 to give Southern a 37-15 advantage with 1:57 remaining in the opening half.  The Lions led 37-18 at the half.

The Lions expanded the lead to 23 on a free throw by Pierce to lead 45-22 with 16:58 remaining in the game.

Southern's biggest lead was 31 on two occasions, the last being on a jumper by Ela Zawadka (Torun, Poland) that put the Lions up 70-39 with 4:41 left.

Defense and rebounding was a big key in the Lions' win as they held Living the Dream to only 31.4 percent (16-of-51) for the game, including only 23.1 percent (6-of-26) in the first half.  They also out-rebounded Living the Dream 55-36 overall and 26-9 on the offensive glass.

Zawadka scored 13 and hit 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.  Fatai Hala'api'api (Maui, Hawaii) added 11 and Kantin and Ivaney Marquez (Valencia, Venezuela) scored 10 apiece.  Marquez also grabbed a team-high nine boards.

Casey Ellis led the Living the Dream with 15 and Cori Culp also reached double-figures with 10.

The 2007 regular season will begin for the Lions in Austin, Texas as they will participate in the St. Edwards Classic on Nov. 16-17.  The Lions will face St. Edwards on Friday (Nov. 16) at 5:30 p.m. and Incarnate Word on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 1 p.m.
