Mehrer collects MIAA Athlete of the Week honor

Two Missouri Southern State University student-athletes were named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Athletes of the Week on Monday (Sept. 12).

Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City, Mo./Winnetonka), a junior middle hitter on the MSSU volleyball team, was named Wilson/MIAA Volleyball Hitter of the Week after she posted a .419 hitting percentage in helping the Lions to a 2-1 record last week.

The 6-foot-1 Mehrer averaged 4.09 points and 3.64 kills per game as Missouri Southern picked up victories over Drury and Missouri-St. Louis and dropped a match to No. 15-ranked North Alabama.

In a 3-1 win Tuesday (Sept. 6) at Drury, Mehrer scored 17 points (16 kills, 2 block assists) and hit .556 (16 kills, 1 error, 27 attempts). Her hitting percentage vs. Drury was the team’s second-best mark this year by an individual, second only to her .579 percentage posted in the season-opening win over Quincy (Ill.).

During the Central Missouri State Challenge Friday (Sept. 9), Mehrer had 13.5 points (11 kills, 1 solo block, 3 block assists) and hit .318 (11-4-22) in a 3-1 win over UMSL. Later in the day, during a 3-0 loss to UNA, she had 14.5 points (13 kills, 3 block assists) and hit .360 (13-4-25).

Mehrer and her Lion teammates open up MIAA play tonight (Sept. 13) at home in a 7 p.m. match with Southwest Baptist.

Mehrer was joined as MIAA Athlete of the Week by MSSU women’s soccer freshman Nikki Llewellyn (O’Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell).
