Volleyball Lions have a spot in conference tourney
With season sweep of MWSC, the Lions are in

Missouri Southern’s volleyball team can breathe a little easier entering its final three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matches of the year. Thanks to their season sweep of Missouri Western, which was completed with a 3-1 win in St. Joseph on Wednesday (Oct. 29), the Lions now own one of the six spots for the MIAA postseason tournament coming up next month.

With Wednesday’s win over the Griffons, the best MWSC could do over the remainder of the season is tie Missouri Southern (16-9, 7-6 MIAA). But then, the Lions would own the tiebreaker, by virtue of the season sweep.

The Lions could move up a bit in the league standings if they can continue their winning ways of late. Emporia State (8-6 in the MIAA) is a half-match ahead of Southern and Washburn stands at 9-6 in the league. Southern has won six of its last eight matches.

The top six teams in the final league standings qualify for the conference tournament, which is returning after a 10-year absence. The top two seeds receive a first-round bye while the No. 3 seed hosts the No. 6 squad. Nos. 4 and 5 will also play at the home site of the fourth seed. MIAA Tournament action begins on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Southern won on Wednesday behind 21 kills from junior Jackie Gallagher (Glendale, Ariz.) and a career high-tying 11 from senior Jenny Ford (Tulsa, Okla.). Senior setter Kym Mutert (Washington, Mo.), named Wilson/MIAA Setter of the Week on Tuesday, was one kill short of her fourth career triple-double, finishing with nine kills, 48 assists and 11 digs. Senior Amy Little (Nixa, Mo.) added 10 kills and 24 digs.

The Lions will celebrate Senior Night on Friday with a 7 p.m. match against No. 3-ranked Truman State at Robert Ellis Young Gym. The following day, Southern hosts Northwest Missouri State in a 12 noon matchup.
