Former Lion, Wyketha Harrell begins her first season as an assistant coach for Southern. A native of Kansas City, she began her collegiate career at Rockhurst University, but transferred after her freshman campaign, to play her remaining three seasons as a Lion, where she was an all MIAA player. Harrell will be responsible for developing post players, monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes, along with recruiting and several other responsibilities.

As a freshman for the Hawks, Harrell started 14 of 24 games, playing for coach Mitts. She averaged 5.8 points and four rebounds per game. A powerful interior player for the Lions, she led the team in rebounds and was a major contributor on the offensive end. During the 2001-2002 season she helped the Lions to their first winning season in five years, and a fifth place finish in the MIAA. At the conclusion of her collegiate career as a senior, Harrell led the Lions to a 19-9 overall mark, their best record since 1996 and narrowly missed making their first NCAA tournament appearance in eight years.

Coach Harrell graduated from Southern in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with an emphasis in kinesiology. After graduation, Harrell was an intern at The Women's Sport Foundation founded by Billie Jean King.  Harrell spent last season as an assistant at Garden City (Kansas) Community College. She is currently persuing a masters degree in sports psychology from the University of Texas -  Pan American.
