Missouri Southern basketball coach Robert Corn has
announced the hiring of Matt Laur as an assistant basketball coach on July 11,
2007. Laur previously served as the head boys basketball coach for three years
Steeleville High School in Steelville, Ill.
While at Steeleville, Laur recorded the most wins in a season in the school's history when his 2004-05 squad went 28-7 and was a sectional finalist. He taught physical education, as well as coaching cross country and golf. The 2006-07 Warriors squad finished third in the Cahokia Conference - Kaskaskia Division. Laur is a 2003 graduate of McKendree College, where he was a four year starter and a four-time NAIA All-American. Laur finished his four-year career as McKendree s all-time scoring leader with 2,874 career points. He is the all-time leading shot-blocker and field goal percentage leader, ranks second in all-time assists, and ranks third in all-time rebounds in school history. He recorded double figures in scoring in 74 consecutive games and was named NAIA Division I Player of the Year after his senior season. As a senior, he averaged 23.4 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists. He set the single-season school records for field goals made (393) and points scored (891) and scored in double figures in every game, including a season-high 37 points against University of Science and Arts (OK). Laur was the 2001 and 2003 American Midwest Conference Player of the Year, while being named the AMC Freshman of the Year in 2000. He spent a week working out with the Indiana Pacers in the summer of 2003 and also did individual workouts with several other teams. Upon graduation, Laur played professionally in Europe, then was picked up and played a season with the Columbus River Dragons of the National Basketball Association Developmental League. Matt and his wife Carrie were married August 4, 2007. Carrie is a teacher and assistant volleyball coach at Webb City High School. The couple resides in Joplin.
