Currently in his 5th year as throws coach, Jamie Tallman has taken the throws
program to a new level. During his tenure, he has coached athletes to 44
All-MIAA performances as well as 14 All-American performances. His athletes have
also broken 11 school records, erasing nearly every throwing record on the
books. This group of talented athletes includes Arley Smith (5x All-American),
Mika Alaihavala (3x All-American), Danee Jones (4x All-American), Mike Hines (2x
All-American), and current Lion Jessica Selby-Tallman (5x All-American).
Tallman’s athletes have garnered many awards under his tutelage. For the past
three years, his throwers have been recognized with the Missouri Southern
Athletic Department’s prestigious award for Female Athlete of the Year (Danee
Jones 2005, Jessica Selby-Tallman 2006,2007). Additionally, Jessica
Selby-Tallman was named the South Central Regional Athlete of the Year during
the 2007 indoor and outdoor seasons.

MSSU female throwers scored 43 points at the MIAA outdoor championships, the
highest points scored by any team in the throwing events. Tallman’s female
hammer throwers also picked up 3 national qualifying marks during the season,
including one automatic mark.
His throwers have also set multiple All-Time MIAA Championship records. In 2004,
Danee Jones broke her own MIAA record in the women’s weight throw and again
rebroke it in 2005 (58-11.50). At the 2005 MIAA Outdoor Championships, senior
Mika Alaihavala set the MIAA javelin record (229-10) and senior Danee Jones set
the MIAA discus record (167-00).
Tallman has also coached Jessica Selby-Tallman to 3 consecutive indoor and
outdoor shot put conference championships (undefeated in MIAA shot put
championships), as well as 2 consecutive hammer throw conference championships.
Tallman competed as a collegiate for Missouri Southern where he captured
multiple MIAA All-Conference performances in the shot put, weight throw, and
hammer throw during his career. In his senior season, he was named Missouri
Southern Track and Field Most Valuable Athlete and qualified for the 2003 NCAA
Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw.
