Childs, Curtis, Godfrey heading to MSSU

Jennifer Jimerson, head softball coach at Missouri Southern State University, has announced that three high school softball standouts signed with the Lions during the early signing period.

Andrea Childs, Tara Curtis and Amanda Godfrey will join the Southern softball squad in the 2005-06 academic year, Jimerson said.

Childs, a native of Silver Lake, Kan., is a 5-foot-6 shortstop and has been a starter for the Silver Lake High School Eagles in each of the last three seasons. As a junior in the spring of 2004, she was a Class 3A all-state selection and also earned second-team all-state honors for all Kansas classes. Childs, who helped the Eagles to the 2003 state championship, holds school seasonal records for doubles and triples. Childs, the daughter of Bill and Jerri Childs, is also an all-state volleyball player, who helped SLHS to state titles in 2003 and 2004.

Curtis, a 5-foot-8 pitcher, is a native of Olympia, Wash. She’s entering her senior season at A.G. West Black Hills High School, where she has been a three-time All-Pac 9 League selection, including first team honors as a junior in 2004. Curtis, also a four-year participant in cross country, holds school season and career records for strikeouts and earned-run average. She has been team MVP in each of the last two campaigns and is a two-time All-Pac 9 academic award winner. The daughter of David and Karen Curtis, she hopes to study dental hygiene at MSSU.

Godfrey is a 5-foot-3 third baseman from Garland (Texas) High School. A native of Sachse, Texas, she’s a four-year starter for the GHS Owls and has helped the team to three straight district and area championships and regional semifinal berths in two of the last three seasons. Godfrey, the daughter of George and Dana Godfrey, is also an All-America cheerleader and has participated in track & field and volleyball at GHS. She hopes to major in mass communications at Southern.

Jimerson is entering her third year as head coach of the Missouri Southern softball team after an All-America career as a second baseman with the Lions. She holds a 42-52 record at MSSU, which opens the 2005 season on Feb. 15 at Northeastern (Okla.) State.
