Four named to All-MIAA Softball Team
Senior SS Woolard highlights MSSU all-conference players

Senior Alese Woolard (Claremore, Okla./Oologah HS), who set the MSSU single-season home run record, was among four Lions named to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Softball Team announced on Monday (May 9).

Woolard, a 5-foot-5 shortstop, earned second-team honors on the all-conference team. Three others, senior Mary Barrow (Muskogee, Okla./Hilldale HS), junior Trish Masters (Rowlett, Texas/Texarkana CC) and freshman J.T. Taylor (Springfield, Mo./Glendale HS), were on the honorable mention list.

Woolard led Missouri Southern in almost every offensive category in 2005. She slugged nine home runs to break the Lions’ single season standard, and drove in a team-high 37 runs. Woolard also led the Lions with a .351 batting average and ranked among MIAA leaders in eight categories, including fifth-place rankings in hits (61, 1.11 pg) and total bases (103, 1.87 pg).

Woolard finishes her career as a three-time All-MIAA selection on the softball diamond. She was an honorable mention pick as a freshman in 2002 and earned second-team accolades as a sophomore in 2003. Woolard ends with top-five career rankings on six MSSU charts, including a fourth-place ranking with 196 career hits.

She’s also an All-MIAA goalkeeper on the soccer pitch and will return next fall to the MSSU women’s squad.

Barrow, the Lions’ catcher, earned All-MIAA laurels for the second time in her four-year career. Also an honorable mention choice as a sophomore in 2003, the 5-foot-5 Barrow batted .259 with six home runs and 30 RBI in 2005. She finished her career a .276 hitter with nine homers and 65 RBI.

Masters, a 5-foot-9 centerfielder, was a newcomer to the Lions in 2005 and finished third on the team with a .290 batting average. She ranked second on the squad with 49 hits and tallied seven stolen bases in as many attempts.

Taylor, a 4-foot-11 outfielder, finished fourth on the team with a .278 batting average. She led the Lions with 10 stolen bases and ranked fourth on the squad with 47 hits. In MIAA play, Taylor’s game went to a higher level –– she ranked second on the team with a .304 batting average in conference games.

Missouri Southern finished 23-32 overall and 8-10 in the MIAA in 2005. After a one-year absence, the Lions made a return trip to the conference’s postseason tournament.
