Lions have seven on softball honor roll
MIAA announces Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll for softball

Seven members of the Missouri Southern State University softball team have been named to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, the conference announced recently.

Seniors Lindsey Long (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Kami Weston (Baxter Springs, Kan.), juniors Mary Barrow (Muskogee, Okla.), Haley Hodson (Joplin, Mo.) and Alese Woolard (Claremore, Okla.), and sophomores Jessie Noid (Marshalltown, Iowa) and Callie Stanford (Webb City, Mo.) received the honor.

Long maintains a 3.481 grade-point average as a dental hygeine major. This season, MSSU’s starting third baseman batted .213 in 36 games with the Lions, scoring 15 runs and walking a team-best 13 times. Eight of Long’s hits went for extra bases, including seven doubles.

Weston, who maintains a 3.207 GPA as a physical education major, finished her career as Southern’s career leader with 218 games played. In 2004, she hit a career-best .340 with 49 hits, including five home runs. The Southern starter at shortstop drove in 12 runs and posted a team-high 24 runs scored.

Barrow, who holds a 3.372 GPA as a biology (pre-medicine major), missed 12 games this year with a knee injury, but finished third on the team with a .309 batting average. She had 10 doubles and two home runs among her 29 hits. She also knocked in 12 runs for the Lions, splitting time as catcher, designated player and first baseman but starting all 34 games she played.

Hodson started 44 of MSSU’s 46 games this year, recording 13 hits and scoring eight runs. In the classroom, the Lions’ starting left fielder maintains a 3.197 GPA as a secondary education major.

Woolard, a starter at second base, carries a 3.338 GPA as a secondary education/unified science major. This year, Woolard batted .248 with a team-high 13 doubles among her 33 hits. She also drove in 15 runs and scored 14.

Noid, a utility player for the Lions after a stellar women’s soccer career, saw action in seven games as a pinch runner. She also garnered her first career stolen base. In the classroom, Noid holds a 3.273 GPA as a physical education major.
Stanford, who maintains a 3.868 GPA as a secondary education/English major, posted a 2.89 ERA and a 7-12 record this year for the Lions. She appeared in 26 games and struck out 51 batters in 118.2 innings of work, limiting opponents to a .231 batting average.

Student-athletes are named to the list under the following criteria: 1.) The student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better at the qualifying institution; 2.) The student-athlete must have at least two terms of attendance at the member school, excluding summer sessions; 3.) The student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior in athletic eligibility; 4.) Student-athletes inactive due to redshirt or hardship qualification are not eligible.
