Two sign on with Southern softball program

Missouri Southern head softball coach Jennifer Jimerson has announced that two former prep standouts have signed to join the Lady Lions program this fall.

Erin Gfeller and Kristin Jennings have committed to Missouri Southern, Jimerson said.

Gfeller is a 5-foot-3 centerfielder from Overland Park, Kan. and Olathe East High School. This year, she was named a first-team selection on the All-Sunflower League team as she helped the Hawks to a Kansas Class 6A state runner-up finish.

Gfeller was also a three-year letterwinner and an honorable mention All-Sunflower League soccer player while at Olathe East. She was named first-team All-Olathe and helped the squad to a Class 6A state title in 2001.

Jennings, a 5-foot-6 third baseman and catcher, comes to Missouri Southern from Antioch (Tenn.) High School. As a senior, she set school records with a .477 batting average and six home runs. Throughout her high school career, Jennings never batted lower than .378. A four-time all-district performer and the Miss AHS Player of the Year for 2003, Jennings was also named offensive player of the year twice during her high school career.

Both Gfeller and Jennings are members of the National Honor Society. Gfeller is also a National Merit Commended Scholar and a Kansas Honor Scholar. Jennings is listed in the Who’s Who Among American High School Students and was named the JROTC Cadet of the Year in 2003.

The Missouri Southern Lady Lions finished the 2003 season with a 23-25 record, including 8-10 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. In their first year under Jimerson, Southern made its 14th consecutive MIAA postseason tournament appearance and set school records for fielding percentage (.970) and fewest errors in a season.
