Eight from Southern softball team collect
MIAA academic award

Eight members of the Missouri Southern
softball team were recently named to the Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association Commissioner’s
Academic Honor Roll.
Only one team from the MIAA had more
players than Missouri Southern’s eight named to the team.
To be eligible for the MIAA
Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must
have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or better at the
qualifying institution; have at least two terms of attendance
at the member school, excluding summer session; and be at least
a sophomore in athletic eligibility. Student-athletes inactive
due to redshirt or hardship qualification are not eligible.
The list of Missouri Southern
student-athletes picked for the team is as follows:
Jana Allison (Senior, Lebanon, Mo.) graduated with a 3.938 GPA in
biology/pre-medicine and was named second-team All-MIAA utility
player. She was the 2003 recipient of the Spencer-Bartlett
Award, going to Missouri Southern’s most outstanding
graduate, and the E.O. & Virginia Humphrey Award, going to
MSSC’s most outstanding student-athlete. Allison, also a
first-team Verizon Academic All-District performer, was one of
seven players to start every game in 2003. She batted .256 with
a team-high 13 doubles and 20 RBI, a figure that was second on
the squad.
Kristen Armilio (Senior, Belton, Mo.) graduated with a 3.165 GPA in marketing and
was an honorable mention All-MIAA performer at first base. She
finished her career as the Lady Lions’ all-time leader
with 1,317 putouts. Armilio, a starter in all 48 games in 2003,
batted .193 with seven RBI and posted a .989 fielding
percentage.
Mary Barrow (Sophomore, Muskogee, Okla.) maintains a 3.596 GPA as a
biology/pre-medicine major. She was an honorable mention
all-conference pick at catcher in 2003 after throwing out 15 of
37 basestealers and picking off six more. Barrow finished third
on the team with a .290 batting average with one homer, eight
doubles and 19 RBI. A starter in all 48 games, she posted a
.981 fielding percentage in her first season as the full-time
catcher.
Haley Hodson (Sophomore, Joplin, Mo.) holds a 3.311 GPA as a secondary education
major. She appeared in 22 games this season, primarily as a
pinch-runner. Hodson scored six runs and went 1-for-6 at the
plate.
Lindsey Long (Junior, Broken Arrow, Okla.), a dental hygiene student, carries a 3.649 GPA.
She led the team with nine stolen bases in 10 attempts while
starting 46 games at third base this year. Long batted .200
with one home run and 10 RBI.
Roxanne Thirion (Junior, Owasso, Okla.) maintains a 3.705 GPA as a psychology
major. This year, she started 43 of the 45 games in which she
played, batting .216 with 10 RBI.
Kami Weston (Junior, Baxter Springs, Kan.), who holds a 3.009 GPA as a kinesiology major,
was an honorable mention All-MIAA shortstop after starting all
48 games in 2003. She batted .256 with two home runs and 15 RBI
and turned in a .961 fielding percentage.
Alese Woolard (Sophomore, Claremore, Okla.) is a 3.739 student who was named a
second-team all-region utility player and a second-team
All-MIAA outfielder in 2003. The MIAA Hitter of the Week on
March 11, she led Southern in most offensive categories,
including batting average (.358), hits (57), runs (37), triples
(10) and total bases (88). Woolard started all 48 games this
year and turned in a .553 slugging percentage and a .427
on-base percentage.
The Lady Lions finished the 2003 season
with a 23-25 overall record and an 8-10 conference mark. Under
first-year head coach Jennifer Jimerson, the team made its 14th
consecutive appearance in the MIAA Postseason Tournament and
set school records for fieldign percentage (.970) and fewest
errors in a season (46).
