Two Southern athletes earn athlete of the week awards
Two Missouri Southern athletes, junior volleyball player Kym Mutert and sophomore women'scross country runner Ashley Caffey, were named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associationathletes of the week on Monday.
Mutert, a 5-8 junior setter for the Lady Lions volleyball team, was named the Wilson/MIAA Setterof the Week after averaging 9.79 assists and recording a rare volleyball triple-double in fivematches last week. For the week, she hit .247 with 32 kills and rang up seven service aces.
The Washington, Mo. native pulled off the triple-double in the Lady Lions' 3-0 victory at Drury onWednesday, when she tallied 10 kills, 10 digs and 32 assists while hitting .500 for the match. In Southern's 3-2 loss on Friday to Henderson State (Ark.), Mutert fell just one kill shy of the same feat when she had nine kills, 18 digs and 47 assists.
Mutert is a graduate of St. Francis Borgia High School.
Caffey, a 5-7 sophomore on Southern's women's cross country team, was named the MIAAWomen's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Caffey led the Lady Lions in their season-opening meet at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville Invitational. She trailed only Division I runners from No. 9-ranked Arkansas and Tulsa (Okla.) infinishing eighth overall with a time of 18:09.50 over the five-kilometer course.
Caffey is a graduate of Lebanon High School.
