Lions add thrower for 2008-09 season

Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern men's track and field coach Tom Rutledge has announced the addition of Cody Chaffin to his list of recruits for the 2008-09 season. Chaffin will attend Southern and compete in track and field beginning in the spring of 2009.

Chaffin, a 6'2, 255 pound thrower, is a native of Granby, Mo. and a 2008 graduate of East Newton High School where he was a four-year letter winner and starter for the football team, as well as a two year letter winner in track and field.

Throwing for coach Mark Van Slyke, Chaffin was a conference champion this past year in the discus helping the Patriots to a league title in 2008, as well as a league and district championship in 2007.

Also a standout on the football field, Chaffin was a four-year starter at tackle for coach Tom Ellis, where he was named All-Conference, All-District and All-State, helping the team to a district championship in 2006 and 2007.

Chaffin is the son of Jeff Chaffin and Lisa Hatfield and plans on majoring in industrial technology engineering at Southern.
