FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Southern athletes have strong showing at Wichita State Wichita, Kan. -- The Lions women picked up wins in the 5000m and the shot put, while the men picked up a second place showing in the 800m as both Missouri Southern track and field teams competed in the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic this weekend. Victoria Kline led a group of Lions that finished first through fourth in the 5k as she won the event with a time of 18:49.35. Chandra Cole, Taylor Whitacre and Ashley Bunch were 2-3-4 in the event. Jessica Selby-Tallman and the Southern throwers had a good showing as Selby-Tallman won the shot put and finished second in the hammer throw. Erin Steffens, Courtney Vie and Jessica Self were 6-7-8 in the shot, while Self, Emilie Mieseler and Amanda Littlefield were 4-5-7 in the hammer throw. Vie finished third in the discus, while Self, Littlefield and Amber Obert were 4-5-7. Jill Weeks finished third in the Javelin with a heave of 39.95m. Erica Culver and Ciara Lipsey both just barely missed out on a provisional height in the pole vault, but the duo finished second and third in the event. Kayla Piley and Jessie Wood both jumped to a height of 1.53m in the high jump to finish fourth and fifth. Alison Walker led four Southern runners that finished 6-7-8-9 in the 800m. Shannan and Stacey Borgard were 7th and 8th, while Olga Bulgarova finished ninth. Channell Lloyd finished fourth in the triple jump while Jestine Hayes was eighth. Lloyd also finished fifth in the 100m hurdles. Kari Fritchie finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase, while Kelly McKay was 10th in the 100m dash. The Southern 4x400m relay team finished third. In men's action, Aki Nummela was just two seconds off of a provisional in the 800m and the freshman finished second in the event. Russell Ellis and Jacob Williams were second and third in the pole vault, while Corey Shumate finished ninth. Corey Reynolds and Chris Brown finished in a four-way tie for first place in the high jump with Reynolds finishing second and Brown fourth on least misses. Jordan Patton finished fifth in the 100m dash, just a tenth of a second from a provisional and four tenths from an automatic qualifying mark with a time of 10.75. Patton placed tenth in the 200m with a time of 22.22, while Phillip Horn was fourth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.08. John Isenman finished fourth in the hammer throw, while Adam Sims was sixth in the shot put. The teams will be back in action this weekend in three different locations. Some will travel to the KU Relays on Thursday, while others will be at Central Missouri on Friday. The whole team will be at Arkansas on Saturday. |
