FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lions women first, men second at 2008 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships
Final Results The Southern women claimed the team title with a 16 point win over second place Emporia State. Southern had eight multiple All-MIAA selections including two each from Jessica Selby-Tallman, Jessica Self, Courtney Vie, Channell Lloyd, Kimi Shank, Kara Eckard, Courtney Waltbillig and Alison Walker. Also earning All-MIAA status was Erica Culver, Ciara Lipsey, Victoria Kline, Stacy Borgard and Carita Riutta. The Lions' DMR team also came away with a new MIAA Meet Record when they topped the previous record of 12:20.32 by more than a second. Selby-Tallman continued her dominance of the shot put winning her fourth-straight MIAA title. She bested her previous building record and 2008 national high of 51-8.25 with a heave of 51 feet nine inches today. Courtney Vie was third, while Jessica Self finished sixth. Walker won the 800m title with a time of 2:18.23, while Eckard and Waltbillig were third and fourth in the mile run. Borgard finished third in the 600yard, while Lloyd was fifth in the 60m hurdles. Shank and Kline finished second and fourth in the 3k. The Missouri Southern men finished second to Central Missouri who took the team title by 24 points over the Lions (120-96). Southern had 15 All-MIAA selections, including four multiple All-MIAA performers in Ryan Arthur, Brennon Benkert, Dustin Miller and Aki Nummela. Nummela was a three-time All-MIAA selection and finished sixth in the high point standings. Jarkko Jarvenpaa, Jordan Patton, Phillip Horn, Corey Reynolds, Jacob Williams, Russell Ellis, Seager Wilson, Corey Shumate, Kyle Davis, Derek Wright and Kevin Wright all earned All-MIAA honors. The pole vaulters continued their dominance of the MIAA finishing first through fourth in the event today. Williams won his first indoor pole vault title today with a height of 16 feet, six and three quarters. Ellis was second, while Wilson and Shumate finished third and fourth. Nummela finished second in the mile run and third in the 800m today. First through third place in the 800m was separated by just six hundredths of a second. Reynolds finished third in the high jump, while Horn and Patton were third and sixth in the 60m hurdles and dash, respectively. Arthur, Jarvenpaa, and Benkert finished second, third and fifth in the 3k. The Lions will now wait to see their fate on the national meet which will take place in two weeks at Minnesota State Mankato. Jessica Selby-Tallman has automatically qualified in the weight throw and the shot put, while Jessica Self could join Selby-Tallman in the weight throw, as well. Self, with her distance of 56 feet, eight and a half inches yesterday, now is 11th nationally. Erica Culver's height of 12 feet, one and a half inch is now a top 10 mark and she could qualify, as well. On the men's side, Jacob Williams and Russell Ellis have both qualified in the pole vault, with Seager Wilson and Corey Schumate's height of 15 feet, 11 inches today sitting them 11th nationally. Corey Reynolds height of six feet, 10 and a quarter today improves his fifth place national standing in the high jump.
