Southern men second, women fourth at MIAA outdoor championships

-- The Missouri Southern men came up just a bit short in their search for the triple crown, as they finished second at the 2007 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships today. Jessica Selby won both the shot and the hammer and helped the Southern women to a fourth - place finish.

In all, the men had 15 All-MIAA performers or teams. Ryan McPeak, Marcus Walton, TJ Britton, Dustin Dixon and Tyler Chiartano all were multiple All-MIAA selections.

McPeak finished third in the 200m and the 400m, while Walton was second in the 400m and helped the 4x400m relay to a third place finish. Britton was fifth in the 400m and 800m, while picking up more honors with the 4x400m relay team.

Chiartano finished third in the 800m, while Dustin Dixon was second in both the 3k and 5k races. Ryan Arthur and Brennan Benkert were first and second in the 10k, while Nick Heberle was fourth in the event. Dustin Miller finished third in the 3000m steeplechase and Corey Reynolds was third in the high jump.

The Southern pole vaulters shined once again going 1-3 and fifth in the event. Russell Ellis went 16 feet, nine and a quarter inches, winning the event,  and increasing his provisional. Seager Wilson and Jacob Williams finished second and third, while Corey Schumate was fifth.

The Southern women had 13 All-MIAA performers, including four multiple All-MIAA selections. Jessica Selby set a new school record and threw the longest hammer distance in Division II today beating her nearest competition by nearly ten feet. She launched the weight 185 feet and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet with a new stadium record. Selby followed that up with a win in the shot put, breaking the Fort Hays stadium record, and running her string of indoor and outdoor titles to three-straight years. The junior has won every MIAA shot put title, indoor and outdoor, she's vied for.

Emilie Miesler finished third in the shot put and fourth in the hammer, while Jessica Self and Courtney Vie finished third and sixth, respectively in the discus. Erica Culver finished second in the pole vault with a provisional height of 12 feet, two inches, while Ciara Lipsey was sixth.

Ashley Bunch was sixth in the 3k and fifth in the 5k, while Chandra Cole was fourth in the 10k. Channell Lloyd was fourth in the 400m, while Danielle Oliver was fifth in the 400m and third in the 100m. Sarah Wallace finished fourth in the 800 and Courtney Waltbillig was sixth in the 1500m. Ysatis Williams finished sixth in the 200m.

Central Missouri took home both the men's and women's titles. The Southern men were second, followed by Pittsburg State, Fort Hays and Northwest Missouri.

Pittsburg State was second in the women's final standings, followed by Truman State, Southern, and Emporia State.

The Lions will play host to the Lionbacker Last Chance Meet this Thursday, May 10 at Hughes Stadium.
