Russell Ellis and Jessica Selby named MIAA Indoor Field Athletes of the Week

Overland Park, Kan. -- Russell Ellis (Caddo Gap, Ark.) and Jessica Selby (Galena, Mo.) have been named the MIAA Indoor Field Athletes of the Week as announced by the league office today.

Ellis, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound junior from Caddo Gap, Ark., earned provisional qualification for the NCAA indoor nationals in the pole vault during each of his first two meets of the season.

In the University of Arkansas Invitational Jan. 12, he placed second with a leap of 16 feet, four and three-quarter inches. He duplicated that mark the following weekend at the Arkansas Razorback Invitational, which was good enough for sixth place.

In last week's meet, he was one of three Lions to earn provisional marks in the men's pole vault.

Ellis is a graduate of Caddo Hills High School.

Selby, a 5-foot-8 junior from Galena, Mo., recorded provisional qualifying marks in the shot put and weight throw during two events at the University of Arkansas to open the season.

She opened the year with fourth place finishes in the shot (46 feet, four and a quarter inches) and weight (53 feet, one and three quarter inches) in the Arkansas Invitational Jan. 12.

Last weekend (Jan. 19-20) at the Razorback Invitational, Selby logged a third-place mark in the weight (53 feet, 11 and three quarter inches) and was fifth in the shot put (46 feet, 11 inches).

The only competitors to defeat her so far have been from NCAA Division I schools.

Selby is a graduate of Reeds Spring (Mo.) High School.
