Twenty-one from MSSU track & field earn All-MIAA


JOPLIN, Mo. - A total of 21 Missouri Southern State University track & field athletes earned All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association honors this past weekend at the conference's outdoor championships held at Emporia (Kan.) State University.

Missouri Southern's men had 11 athletes earn all-conference awards. The Southern women had 10 on the all-league list.

Both MSSU squads crowned conference champions in two events. On the men's side, it was freshman Ryan McPeak (Joplin, Mo.) earning the league title in the 400-meter dash. Senior Matt Campbell (Worthington, Ind.) collected his fifth MIAA championship (three indoors, two outdoors) in the pole vault. The Missouri Southern women had sophomore Jessica Selby (Galena, Mo.) capture two league crowns. She repeated as MIAA outdoor shot put champion and also added her first title in the hammer.

McPeak also helped the Lions' 4x400-meter relay team to a runner-up finish. That unit included Nick Patrick (Carthage, Mo.), Moses Manga (Winfield, Kan.) and Marcus Walton (Potosi, Mo.). Additionally, McPeak finished fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Senior Mike HInes (Miami, Fla.) charted a runner-up finish in the discus. Senior Iashia Castle (Kansas City, Mo.) finished as conference runner-up in the women's triple jump.

Others to earn All-MIAA honors for the Missouri Southern men included: Walton, third in the 800-meter run; Dustin Miller (Jr., Carthage, Mo.), third in the 3000-meter steeplechase and sixth in the 5000-meter run; Kyler Rushing (Sr., Sarcoxie, Mo.), fifth in the high jump; Russell Ellis (So., Caddo Gap, Ark.), third in the pole vault; Jeremy McCadney (Sr., Union City, Tenn.), fifth in the long jump; and Adam Sims (Fr., Herculaneum, Mo.), fifth in the shot put.

For the Missouri Southern women, others to earn All-MIAA were: Castle, fifth in the 400-meter dash; Alison Walker (Fr., West Plains, Mo.), third in the 800-meter run; Sarah Wallace (Jr., Branson, Mo.), sixth in the 800-meter run; Kelly O'Toole (So., Joplin, Mo.), sixth in both the 3000-meter run and 5000-meter run; Dionne Prince (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.), third in the triple jump, third in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the long jump; Madeline Cline (Sr., Excelsior Springs, Mo.), tied for sixth in the pole vault; Jessica Self (Fr., Neosho, Mo.), sixth in the shot put.

Castle and Walker also ran a leg on the women's third-place finishing 4x400-meter relay. Freshman Camille Brown (San Jose, Calif.) and Stacy Borgard (Ozark, Mo.) completed that relay unit.
