Mathes named MIAA Athlete of the Week

Missouri Southern State University senior DeMarcus Mathes joined senior teammate Neil Hombs as winners of the first two MIAA Track Athlete of the Week honors in the outdoor season.

Mathes, a 6-foot-0, 185-pound senior from Dallas, Texas, won the 200 meters at the Pittsburg State/Wendy's Invitational Saturday (March 26). He clocked in with a time of 22.84 seconds in chilly conditions, defeating tHombs by 0.10 seconds.

Mathes, who recently completed his football eligibility by breaking Rod Smith's single-season reception mark (69), is a graduate of the Lancaster High School, and transferred to Southern from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.
