Lions begin 2005 indoor track season at home
Southern hosts MSSU/Radio Shack Invitational Friday, Saturday

Missouri Southern State University kicks off the indoor track & field season on Friday and Saturday when it hosts the MSSU/Radio Shack Invitational in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The 2005 field includes representatives from five teams, including MSSU and Pittsburg State University. Independence (Kan.) Community College, Allen County (Kan.) Community College and Neosho County (Kan.) Community College round out the field.

Action begins on Friday at 5 p.m. with field events. Friday’s lone running event is the men’s distance medley relay, which is the final event of the night and takes place at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the event heats up with more field events starting at 11 a.m. The running events are slated to begin at 2 p.m. with the 60-meter dash prelims. The last event of the day on Saturday, the mile relay, begins at 4:30 p.m.

The MSSU women return eight All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association performers, including 2003 indoor All-America Danee Jones, a senior thrower from Clayton, Mo., from last year’s conference championship team. Jones is a two-time MIAA champion in the weight throw. Senior Ashley Caffey (Lebanon, Mo.), last year’s MIAA champion in the 5000-meter run leads the Southern distance corps.

Southern’s men have five returning All-MIAA performers from their 2004 conference indoor championship squad, including 2004 indoor national qualifier Matt Campbell (Worthington, Ind.) in the pole vault. Campbell, a junior, won the 2004 MIAA indoor championship in event, while junior Kyle Rutledge (Joplin, Mo.) captured the conference outdoor pole vault title.

The MSSU/Radio Shack Invitational is the first of two collegiate home meets on the schedule this season for the Lions. Southern also hosts the Baymont Inn/Fazoli’s Open on Feb. 4-5.
