Alahaivala, Caffey earn MIAA Athlete of the Week

Two juniors on the Missouri Southern State University track & field teams, Mika Alahaivala (Ylivieska, Finland) and Ashley Caffey (Lebanon, Mo.) were named MIAA Athletes of the Week on Tuesday (May 4).

Alahaivala, a 5-foot-8 and 200-pound junior, posted a throw of 212 feet, 2 inches in the javelin at the Missouri Southern Bill Williams Invitational last weekend. He finished only three inches behind Eric Brown of Division I Arkansas at the meet.
It marked the second MIAA Athlete of the Week honor this season for Alahaivala, a graduate of Ylivieska High School.

Caffey, a 5-foot-7 junior, ran the second-fastest 3000-meter race in Missouri Southern history as she won the event at the Bill Williams Invitational on Saturday (May 1).
Caffey improved her NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the event as she turned in a clocking of 10:08.29.
Caffey has provisional marks in two events this season, including another in the 5000-meter run.
