Southern nets six qualifying marks
at Arkansas FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- One week after topping her own school shot put record, sophomore Jessica Selby did it again. This time, Selby charted a third-place throw of 49 feet, 1.5 inches in the Razorback Invitational Jan. 20-21 at the University of Arkansas. That toss was 28 inches better than Selby's school record mark last weekend in Fayetteville. The throw by Selby was an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark, meaning Selby is guaranteed a spot at the national championships in Boston this March. Selby's shot put was one of six qualifying marks posted by the Lions on the weekend. The Missouri Southern men had three of the qualifying marks, including one automatic berth. That goes to senior Kyle Rutledge, who won the pole vault competition at the Arkansas meet with a vault of 16-8.75. Rutledge came into the weekend ranked No. 2 in the nation behind teammate Matt Campbell, who cleared 17-00.75 last weekend at Arkansas. The MSSU men also set a new school record in the distance medley relay. The Lions turned in an NCAA-II provisional qualifying time of 10 minutes, 0.35 seconds, smashing by more than 20 seconds the school record set in 1994. Southern's time this weekend landed it sixth in the DMR field at Arkansas. Also for the Lion men, Kyle Davis picked up a provisional qualification in the mile when he finished in 4:15.36. Two more MSSU women had provisionals on the weekend. Alison Walker finished 12th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.72. Senior Iashia Castle placed fifth in the triple jump with an improvement on her provisional from last weekend. This time, Castle leaped 37-11.50 for fifth place.
