Six from men’s soccer receive MIAA
honor
At-Large Commissioner’s Honor Roll
announced
Six members of the Missouri Southern State
University men’s soccer team have been named to the
At-Large Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association
Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.
Lucas Silva
(Teresina, Brazil), Joe Strese (Omaha, Neb.), Jeremy
Vacek (Springfield, Neb.), Cesar Vazquez
(Caracas, Venezuela), J.P. West (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Zac Zalewski (Lincoln,
Neb.) were named to the honor roll announced on Tuesday by the
conference.
Silva, a junior midfielder, holds a 3.674
grade-point average and is a computer science major. This past
fall, he played in 15 games with the Lions, garnering 10 starts
and tallying one assist.
Strese, a senior defender, maintains a
3.323 GPA as a business management major. In 2003, he played in
all 16 games for Southern and was a starter in 14 of them.
Vacek, a senior forward and a computer
science major, carries a 3.945 GPA. He played in all 16 games
last fall with the Lions, starting 15 contests and tallying one
goal, the game-winning tally vs. John Brown (Ark.).
Vazquez is an international business major
with a 3.588 GPA. A senior goalkeeper on the MSSU squad, he
went 2-4 in goal for the Lions this past fall, posting a 2.98
goals-against average with 45 saves.
A sophomore midfielder, West notched two
goals and one assist in 2003 with the Lions, including
game-winners vs. William Woods (Mo.) and Harding (Ark.). In the
classroom, West is undecided on a major but carries a 3.171
GPA.
Zalewski is a sophomore defender and
maintains a 3.56 GPA as a business major. On the pitch last
fall, Zalewski was one of just two Lions to start all 16 games.
His lone goal of the season was the game-winner vs.
Missouri-Rolla.
Student-athletes are named to the list
under the following criteria: 1.) The student-athlete must have
a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better at the qualifying
institution; 2.) The student-athlete must have at least two
terms of attendance at the member school, excluding summer
sessions; 3.) The student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior
or senior in athletic eligibility; 4.) Student-athletes
inactive due to redshirt or hardship qualification are not
eligible.
Member schools’ student-athletes from
sports in which the MIAA does not sponsor a championship are
named to the At-Large Honor Roll.
