Two soccer Lions earn academic honors from
SSC
Missouri Southern State University junior J.P. West (Broken
Arrow, Okla.) and sophomore Tyler
Witte (Plano, Texas) received
academic honors on Wednesday from the Southwest Soccer
Conference.
West, a 5-11 midfielder, was one of 11
players from around the league named to the SSC All-Academic
Team. Witte, a 6-1 defender, earned a spot on the SSC
Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
West, a marketing major who carries a 3.377
cumulative grade-point average, led the Lions with three goals
and tied for the team lead with 31 shots and 13 on goal. One of
his three scores on the year was the game-winner in the 52nd
minute of a 2-1 victory at Harding. (Ark.). Last year, West was
a member of the MIAA Commissioner’s At-Large Academic
Honor Roll. Earlier this week, he was named an honorable
mention selection for the All-SSC Men’s Soccer Team.
Witte, who maintains a 3.242 GPA, is a
computer information systems major with a minor in business. In
2004, had eight shots including four on goal, and contributed
to the Lions’ defense, which limited foes to a .097 shot
percentage.
West and Witte were two of only five Lions
to start each of the team’s 19 matches this past season.
Missouri Southern finished its season in
the newly-formed conference with a 2-14-3 overall record,
including 1-11-2 in the SSC, a league that features two teams,
No. 8 Incarnate Word (Texas) and No. 21 Northeastern State
(Okla.) that will be involved in the coming NCAA Division II
postseason.
