Nine more Southern student-athletes on MIAA
Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll

Nine more student-athletes from Missouri
Southern State College were named to the Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association Commissioner’s
Academic Honor Roll, the conference has announced.
Three of the Southern athletes were listed
on the honor roll for baseball. Six more were named on the
men’s at-large team, a listing for sports not sanctioned
by the MIAA.
From the Southern baseball team, senior Nick Johnson (Joplin, Mo.), junior Kevin Schiller
(Joplin, Mo.) and sophomore Josh Tupper (Joplin, Mo.) were named to the honor roll.
Johnson, a
senior, maintains a 3.039 GPA as a physical education student.
This year for the Lions, he posted a 4-7 record with a 5.13 ERA
in 14 appearances. He tied for the team lead with 72 innings
piched and was second on the squad with 65 strikeouts.
Schiller, a
3.029 junior business student, played in 38 of the team’s
50 games this year, starting 28. He batted .200 and had six
doubles among his 15 hits on the year.
Tupper, a
sophomore and also a business major, posts a 3.130 GPA. This
season, he was 1-2 on the mound with 31 strikeouts in 30
innings of work. He finished with an 8.40 ERA.
The Missouri Southern baseball team
finished the 2003 season with a 27-23 won-lost record,
including a 15-14 mark in the MIAA.
The At-Large MIAA Commissioner’s
Academic Honor Roll had the following men’s soccer
players from 2002: Wes Brewer (Webb
City, Mo.), Jeremy Brokate (Reeds Spring, Mo.), Gustavo Rumbos (Iola,
Kan.), Lucas
Silva (Teresina, Brazil), Joe Strese (Omaha, Neb.) and Cesar Vazquez (Caracas,
Venezuela).
A sophomore midfielder in 2002, Brewer maintains
a perfect 4.0 GPA as a biology/pre-pharmacy major and this past
season he saw action in three contests for the Lions soccer
team.
Brokate carries
a 3.618 average in the classroom as an economics/finance major.
On the field this past fall, the junior forward scored a pair
of goals while playing in 13 of Southern’s 16 contests.
Rumbos, a 3.315
student in international business, missed half of the season
with an injury. A senior midfielder, he tallied one goal, the
tying score in a the closing seconds of regulation in an
eventual 2-2 tie with the University of Indianapolis.
Silva, who holds
a 3.678 GPA as a sophomore computer science major, tied for the
team lead in goals (five) and points (13) in 2002. The
midfielder added three assists and one game-winning goal and
was one of three Lions to start all 16 games.
Strese maintains
a 3.33 GPA as an economics/finance major, and this year the
junior defenseman played in eight of Southern’s 16 games.
Vazquez is
a 3.676 junior in international business and this year was the
Lions starting goalkeeper. He notched 95 saves and posted a
1.63 goals-against average with four shutouts in 15 games.
Missouri Southern ended the 2002 soccer
season with a 5-10-1 overall record and begins the 2003
campaign, under new head coach Kiley Cirillo, on Sept. 1 at
home vs. Benedictine (Kan.).
To be eligible for the MIAA
Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must
have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or better at the
qualifying institution; have at least two terms of attendance
at the member school, excluding summer session; and be at least
a sophomore in athletic eligibility. Student-athletes inactive
due to redshirt or hardship qualification are not eligible.
