Lions earn third seed at NCAA Division II Super Regional

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Missouri Southern golf team has been selected as the third seed from the Central Region for this year s NCAA Division II Men s Golf Super Regional.  The Lions will host the event on May 7-9 at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Joplin.

"We're thrilled to get the three seed and play in that first group on Monday," said head coach Kevin Greim.  "This is the event we've been pointing to all spring, so we're ready.  We have an obvious advantage playing this event at Twin Hills.  We know it well and the other teams don't.  That evens out a bit over a three-day tournament, but it's still an advantage.  But we know we have to play well to be able to enjoy that advantage.

"This event carries a lot of pressure with it because only the winner from the Central and winner from the Great Lakes moves on to nationals.  And only the individual winner not on one of those teams from both regions combined gets to move on.  So the guys who handle the pressure the best will have a leg up on everyone else."

The Super Regional consists of the top eight teams from the Central and the Great Lakes Regions.  The top five individuals in the region not on those teams selected will also participate in the event.  In all, 90 golfers will tee it up during the tournament which begins with a practice round on May 6.

While two regions compete at each Super Regional site, they do not necessarily compete against each other.  Only the winning team from each region will make this year s national tournament to be hosted by Grand Valley State.  The individual with the low tournament score not on a winning team will also make the national tournament.

Admission is free to the public.  Anyone interested in volunteering to work the event should contact Kevin Greim at 625-3075.
