Lions finish second after final round of Missouri Southern Invitational

Joplin, Mo.
- Washburn University shot a second-round 294 to rebound from a four-shot deficit and capture the Missouri Southern Invitational today at Loma Linda Country Club in Joplin.

Southern's Tommy Clifford finished third overall with a 75 in round two for a two-day total of 147. The Ichabod's Matt Ewald improved his first-round score of 75 by eight strokes to shoot the only under par score of the tournament at 67 and win individual medalist honors with a 142.

Eric Byers and Tyler Goecker tied for fifth overall with a two-day total of 150. Adam Nelson was 28th with a 158 and Corey Clingan finished tied for 29th with a 159.

Southern's "b" team finished eighth and David Clark led the team with a 156, tied for 26th. David Eddy and Ben Perry shot a 160, while Adam Johnson and Brent Moore shot a 164 and 167, respectively.

Southern shot a two-day total of 602, just six shots behind Washburn's total of 596. Central Missouri was third at 619, while Winona State and Missouri Western tied for fourth at 623.

Ewald won the individual title and Fort Hays' Nick Rotello, the first day leader, was second, just two shots behind. Clifford shot a 147and finished third, while Southwest Baptist's Justin Sellin was fourth at 149. Byers, Goecker and Missouri Western's Dallas Mesa were tied for fifth at 150.

The Lions will be back in action next week playing at the Central Regional Invitational at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City.
