MSSU golf, tennis teams announce signees

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Missouri Southern State University men's golf and women's tennis teams have announced a pair of signees for the 2006-07 season.

For the Lion golf team, Adam Nelson has signed a national letter-of-intent with the Lions. In women's tennis, Lauren Skimbo has inked with Southern.

Nelson, of Parsons, Kan., is a four-year letterwinner with the Labette County High School Grizzlies of coach Clint Witty. He comes to Southern after three straight all-state finishes in golf. As a junior, Nelson was fourth at the Kansas Class 4A state meet. A two-time SEK League champion, he placed fifth in the state as a sophomore and was runner-up as a freshman.

Nelson is also a standout in basketball, earning first-team All-SEK and honorable mention all-state accolades as a senior.

He is the son of Daniel and Brenda Nelson.

Skimbo, a native of Claremore, Okla., is a four-year tennis starter under coach Pat Heidledge at Claremore High School. A well-rounded student-athlete, Skimbo is also a four-year letterwinner and an all-district and all-county soccer player. In basketball, she's an all-conference and all-state honoree. Skimbo helped the Lady Zebras to two state basketball titles and two state soccer runner-up finishes.

The daughter of Lawrence and Valerie Skimbo, she intends to study psychology at MSSU.

Missouri Southern's women's tennis team is coming off a runner-up finish at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament and, after a No. 7 regional ranking last week, is hopeful of earning a spot in the NCAA Division II North Central Region Tournament.

The Lion men's golf team is coming off a fourth-place finish in both the MIAA Tournament and the MIAA regular season standings. Southern will be making its fifth consecutive NCAA postseason tournament next week as the team travels to the NCAA-II Central/Great Lakes Super Regional in Crest Hill, Ill.
