Long shoots 302 at NCAA-II Men’s Golf Championships
Southern senior concludes career at championship tourney
Missouri Southern senior Kyle Long (Joplin, Mo.) shot his low round of 74 on Thursday (May 22) and finished with a 302 total at the 2003 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships in Sunriver, Ore.
Long, competing as an individual, carded 76 on each of the other three days of the tournament, which was held on the par-72 Crosswater Golf Club. His 302 total landed him in a tie for 56th place. He finished the spring portion of the season with a 75.8 average to lead the Lions.
Francis Marion (S.C.) won the team championship by 14 strokes and finished with a total of 1149. Defending national champion Rollins (Fla.) was second with 1163. The Central Region representative, Washburn (Kan.) of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, was 16th in the 18-team field.
Long was the second-highest finishing individual from the MIAA. Washburn’s Derek Dultmeier tied for 33rd with a 297.
Long was qualified for the Division II Championships by placing third at the NCAA-II Central Regional in Bolivar earlier in May. The two golfers ahead of Long in the individual standings were from Washburn, meaning Long earned the region’s individual berth in the tourney.
The Missouri Southern golf team placed second in the final MIAA standings in 2003 despite winning the conference tournament. The Lions, who placed in the top three in four of their six tournaments this spring, went on to finish third at the Central Regional.
