Lions place ninth at Missouri Intercollegiate LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. -- Missouri Southern's men's golf team opened the 2005-06 season on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 6-7 at the Missouri Intercollegiate Tournament played at The Club at Porto Cima. The Lions placed ninth in the 19-team field, for which every collegiate men's golf squad in the state was invited. Southern carded a 72-hole total of 942 (315-306-321) and finished one stroke up on 10th-place William Woods and 17 back of eighth-place UMKC. The University of Missouri, with an 816, won the tournament by 46 strokes over runner-up Lindenwood. Junior Eric Byers (Humboldt, Kan./Johnson County CC) fired a 226 (76-76-74) to lead the Lions and tie for 13th individually. Sophomore Ben Perry (Kansas City, Mo./Lee's Summit North) shot a 236 (76-77-83) and tied for 43rd. Tyler Osburn (Tahlequah, Okla.) tied for 49th with a 238 (81-77-80). Tyler Goecker (Kansas City, Mo./Johnson County CC) and Ryan Smith (Superior, Wis.) each shot 247. Southern was third among competing MIAA schools. Missouri Western tied for third with Missouri State at 910 and Central Missouri State was sixth with a 912. Byers was the third-highest finishing golfer from the MIAA. The Lions have next week off before playing at the Truman Fall Classic on Sept. 19-20. That's the first of two MIAA-sanctioned events of the fall season.
