Southern is runner-up in Central Region When the dust cleared at the 2005 Central/Great Lakes Regional Golf Tournament, Washburn University proved to be the team to beat, distancing the field in the Central Regional Tournament by 24 shots and edging Great Lakes Regional Champion Northern Kentucky University by a single stroke on the final day. Both Washburn and Northern Kentucky advance to the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships to be held later this month in Savannah, Georgia. Missouri Western's No. 1 player Brice Garnett was the low individual of the tournament, defending his Central Regional title last season, and also advances to the championship. Washburn shot 298 on Day 3, the same score as its opening round, getting a 75 from Chris McGown, a 73 from Matt Warnock and a 75 from Jeremiah Nelson to finish the tournament at 890. The Ichabods distanced itself from the rest of the Central Regional field as Missouri Southern shot 906 for 2nd place and Winona State shot 907 for a 3rd place finish. Host Missouri Western shot 910 as did Central Missouri State to tie for 4th place in the tournament. Garnett finished the 3-round tournament at +1 over par, firing a 73 on the final day after shooting a 72 on his first round and a 68 during yesterday's second round. Garnett won the tournament last season. Adam Frank of Central Missouri State finished a +7 for the event as did McGown to tie for 2nd place. Washburn's Warnock finished alone in 4th place with Winona State's Justin Carrier and Mo. Southern's Ben Perry tying for 5th place with a 221 score. On the Great Lakes side, Curtis Phelps won the tournament with a +6 over par 219, edging Gannon's Dave Patronik who shot +8, 221. Northern Kentucky shot 891 for the tournament and held a 22 stroke advantage over 2nd place Grand Valley State who battled back after standing in last place after the opening round of play. NKU's Andrew Jewell shot a 75 on his 3rd round to finish alone in 3rd place while Indianapolis' Chris Clemens shot 78 on the final round to finish alone in 4th. |
