Lions get second straight win at Ironhorse
Southern shoots 297 on Monday to win Central Invitational

Missouri Southern fired its first sub-300 round of the spring on Monday and posted its first win of the 2004-05 season, a two-stroke victory at the Central Region Invitational.

The Lions, winning the tournament for the second straight year, shot a 297 on Monday and came into Tuesday with a two-shot lead on Washburn. After initially beginning second-round play Tuesday, the remainder tournament was called off due to inclement weather.

Fort Hays (Kan.) State finished four strokes back of Washburn with a 303, while Central Missouri State and Winona (Minn.) State tied for fourth with 304.

MSSU senior Danny Sinksen (Sioux Falls, S.D.) shot a 71 on Monday to tie for the overall lead. Sinksen finished fourth in a scorecard playoff to determine the medalist, Cole Nondorf of FHSU.

Senior Andrew Koehler (Superior, Wis.) tied for seventh place with a 73. Both Sinksen and Koehler shot 34 on the back nine at the par 72, 6889-yard Ironhorse Golf Club in Leawood, Kan.

Senior Travis Stockholm (Springfield, S.D.) tied for 14th place with a 76 (38-38). Senior Geir Askvik (Oslo, Norway) tied for 22nd with a 77 (38-39). Freshman Ben Perry (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) rounded out the Lion contingent, shooting an 83 (42-41) in just his second tournament of the spring.

The Lions shot a day 2 low round of 300 and won last year’s tournament at Ironhorse by four strokes over Winona State.

Missouri Southern continues its season next Monday and Tuesday (April 18-19) at the MIAA Tournament in Blue Springs, Mo. The Lions are currently fourth in the MIAA standings with 17 points. However, Southern is just five points back of second place Central Missouri State, which trails Washburn by six, 28-22.
