Golf Lions seventh at NSU Fall Classic
Watts ties for 11th to lead Southern

The Missouri Southern men’s golf team finished with a 54-hole total of 907 and placed seventh out of 17 teams on Tuesday at the Northeastern State Classic in Muskogee, Okla.

Southern opened the tournament on Monday with a score of 291 as play was suspended due to darkness. Teams were to have played two rounds of 18 holes on Monday at the par 71 Muskogee Country Club.

The Lions followed up with a 311 in the second round and finished with a 305 in Round 3 on Tuesday. Final team standings had Southern three strokes behind sixth-place West Texas A&M and four strokes in back of fifth-place Cameron (Okla.). Behind medalist Eric Moore’s 214, Northeastern State won the tournament with an 870 (285-300-285). Central Missouri State was second with 891 (293-304-294).

Senior Andrew Watts (Carthage, Mo.) led Missouri Southern as he tied for 11th with a score of 223, highlighted by an opening round 67. Watts came back with a 76 in the second round and wrapped up with 80.

Junior Andrew Koehler (Superior, Wis.) shot 228 (76-78-74) to tie for 25th. Juniors Danny Sinksen (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt HS) and Geir Askvik (Oslo, Norway/Dodge City CC) both turned in cards of 230. Sinksen shot 72-78-80, while Askvik shot a 76 in the opening round and followed up with 79 and 75 in the last two.

Junior Travis Stockholm (Springfield, S.D./Paris CC) finished with 234 (78-80-76) to round out the Southern team competitors.

Senior John Dugger (Joplin, Mo.) carded a 233 (70-85-78), competing as an individual in the tournament.

Missouri Southern the second-highest finishing team from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Washburn (Kan.) placed ninth and Pittsburg State (Kan.) was 17th.

Up next on the fall schedule for the Lions is the Missouri Southern Invitational, which will be played on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 6-7) at Loma Linda Country Club.
