Lions win Central Region Invitational
Southern shoots day 2 low round of 300 to collect crown

Missouri Southern State University shot a Day 2 low score of 300 on Tuesday to win the Central Region Invitational in Leawood, Kan. The victory marked Southern’s fourth team championship of the 2003-04 season.
Southern sat in third place after Monday’s round on the par 72, 6,889-yard Ironhorse Golf Club. The Lions shot 313 on Monday and trailed Central Missouri State by four strokes. But on Tuesday, aided by an 11-stroke improvement from junior Andrew Koehler (Superior, Wis.) and an eight-stroke betterment from junior Danny Sinksen (Sioux Falls, S.D.), the Lions won the tournament by four strokes. Koehler began the tournament as Southern’s spring leader with a 75.1 average.
The Central Region Invitational marks the Lions’ final tune-up before the MIAA Tournament on April 20-21 at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan.
Senior Andrew Watts (Carthage, Mo.) finished one stroke off of the lead, carding a 151 (77-74) to tie for third individually. Junior Travis Stockholm (Springfield, S.D.) and junior Geir Askvik (Oslo, Norway) tied for ninth on the leaderboard with scores of 153. Stockholm shot a 79 on Tuesday to go with his first-round score of 74. Askvik had a 75 on Tuesday, coupled with a score of 78 on Monday.
Sinksen finished with a 160 (84-76) and Koehler rounded out the Southern contingent with a 161 (86-75).
Runner-up Winona State (Minn.) was four strokes behind the Lions with a 617 (311-306). Central Missouri State finished third with 618 (309-309), while Missouri Western and Washburn completed the top five.
Southern, seeking its first ever MIAA season points championship, will take a slim 2.5-point lead into the MIAA Tournament next week. MSSU won the MIAA Tournament last year, but finished as runner-up to Washburn in the season standings.
The Central Region Invitational was not an MIAA points event.
