Men's golf finishes fifth at CSU-Monterey Bay

The Missouri Southern men's golf team placed fifth out of seven NCAA Division II teams at the California State University-Monterey Bay Otter Golf Invitational on Tuesday. The Lions shot a three-round total of 958 and finished seven strokes back of fourth-place Grand Canyon University.

The top performance for the Southern men came from senior Kyle Long (Joplin, Mo.), who finished just five strokes off of the lead with a 228. Long got progressively better in each of the tournament's three rounds on Monday and Tuesday. He opened with a 79 and came back with a 77 before closing the tournament with a 72.

Sophomore Andrew Watts (Carthage, Mo.) tied for 19th place as he carded 240 (76-81-83). Senior Mickey Carpenter (Neodesha, Kan.) and sophomore Danny Sinksen (Sioux Falls, S.D.) each tied for 28th with 247s and sophomore Andrew Koehler (Superior, Wis.) ended with a 257 (89-89-79).

California State-Stanislaus won the tournament with a card of 904 that included two rounds under 300. Florida Gulf Coast University was second with 922, followed by California State-Chico (927), Grand Canyon and Missouri Southern. Southern Colorado (972) was sixth and Northwest Nazarene (1002) was seventh.

Next on the Lions schedule is their own Missouri Southern Crossroads of America Invitational, set for Monday and Tuesday, April 7-8. It will mark the first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sanctioned event of the spring.
