Southern Men/Women finish second in 20th annual Southern Stampede

The Missouri Southern men's and women's cross country programs both finished second today in the 20th annual running of the Southern Stampede at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

Harding's men and Tulsa's women claimed the team titles for the event. Daniel Kirwa of Harding and Alex Becker of Tulsa were the individual champions.

Southern's Kimi Shank was the top division II finisher, placing fourth in the women's 5k with a time of 17:35.7. Jarkko Jarvenpaa was the Southern men's top finisher, placing ninth with a time of 25:32.5 in the 8k race.

The Harding men placed four runners in the top six to easily take the team title. The Tulsa women had three in the top ten, with all five scoring times in the top 12 to capture the women's team trophy.

Kara Eckard finished 19th with a time of 18:20, while Olga Bulgarova, Kari Fritchie, Ashley Bunch and Victoria Kline were 33rd, 39th, 47th and 55th, respectively. Silvia Pineda placed 117th with a time of 20:28.5.

Southern's Brennan Benkert finished ninth with a time of 25:34.9, while Aki Nummela was 13th at 26:03.7. Chris Bell and Derek Mendell were 43rd and 44th, while Shawn Goebel and Deric Kimrey were 82nd and 155th, respectively.

Southern will take a week off and will return to action at the Oklahoma State Jamboree on October 4.
