Southern Women Win, Men Fifth In Weekend Cross Country Competition

Sophomore Kimi Shank and the Missouri Southern women's cross country team won their second straight event, while the men's team finished fifth out of an extremely competitive field in weekend cross country competition.

Shank completed the 5k course in a time of 18:19, finishing 11 seconds in front of her nearest competition. The Lions placed their top five runners all in the top 20. Kara Eckard finished fifth with a time of 18:48.88, while Kari Fritchie, Ashley Bunch, and Courtney Waltbillig were 18th, 19th, and 20th, respectively. Taylor Whitacre finished 26th, while Krista Merrill, Olga Bulgarova and Alison Walker were 60th, 67th and 77th.

The Lions scored 61 points to defeat second place DePauw by 31. Southwest Baptist, Central Missouri and Northern Kentucky round out the top five.

Dustin Dixon finished ninth to help the men's team to a fifth place finish at the Fort Hays State Invitational. Fifth ranked Colorado Mines won the event with a point total of 56 over second place Butler Community College. NCAA D-I Colorado, ranked second, finished third, while the Air Force Academy and Southern round out the top five. Adams State, ranked second in Division II, finished sixth.

Isaac Garcia finished 29th with a time of 27:13.91, while Ryan Arthur and Brennon Benkert were 31st and 35th, respectively. Dustin Miller was 41st and Kyle Davis finished 84th.

The Lions will be back in action October 20 at the MIAA Cross Country Championships in Kirksville, Mo.
