Southern men and women fall at Arkansas in season opener

Fayetteville, Ark. --
Sophomore Kimi Shank finished third for the women, while sophomore Brennon Benkert was fifth for the men as the Missouri Southern men's and women's cross country teams competed in a dual with the University of Arkansas today in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks and Lady Backs took both races.

Shank ran the 4k course in a time of 13:52.2, finishing just behind Arkansas's top runners who both finished neck and neck with a 13:51.3 and 13:51.6.

Arkansas had 10 of the top 11 finishers in the race. Sophomore Courtney Waltbillig finished 12th for the Lions with a time of 15:04.7, while Kari Fritchie, Ashley Bunch, Taylor Whitacre and Kara Eckard were 13th -16th. Victoria Kline and Alison Walker were 18th and 19th, while Olga Bulgurova and Krista Merrill were 21st and 22nd.

Benkert ran the four mile course in a time of 20:31.9 finishing just in front of Isaac Garcia and Dustin Dixon as the trio took 5th through 7th place. Nick Heberle, Ryan Arthur, Dustin Miller and Anthony Reed finished 9th through 12th.

Southern will be back in action this next Saturday, September 15th as the Lions play host to the annual Southern Stampede, a race that attracts over 2000 runners annually.
