Southern men place second, women fourth at NCAA South Central Regional

The Missouri Southern men's cross country team qualified for nationals as finishing second while the women finished fourth at the 2006 NCAA Division II South Central Regional today in Warrensburg at the University of Central Missouri.

With the finish, the men have qualified for the NCAA Division II National race to be held in Pensacola, Florida on November 18th. Southern finished behind regional champ Abilene Christian. ACU finished 1-4 and had all five runners in the top eight.

Dustin Dixon and Brett Musser finished 10th and 11th with times of 32:31 and 32:35. Ryan Arthur was 13th with a time of 32:38. All three runners were named to the All-Region Team. Kyle Davis was 16th at 32:48 and Brennon Benkert was 23rd at 33:11. Isaac Garcia (33:51)and Ricky Armstrong (35:20) rounded out the Lions finishers.

ACU won its seventh-straight regional and Nicodemus Naimdu won his third straight individual title. Naimdu, last years Division II individual champion, will look to become the first man to win three different Divsion II titles. Central Missouri, Fort Hays and East Central Oklahoma rounded out the top five. ACU, Southern and Central all qualified for the national meet, while Cameron's David Chirchirr and ECU's Koby Styles were the men's individual qualifiers.

Kimi Shank finished 13th and was named All-Region as she helped the Lions to a fourth-place finish. Abilene Christian won the women's race, with Pittsburg State, Central Missouri, Southern and Southwest Baptist rounding out the top five. ACU and PSU will qualify for the national meet, while Truman State's Jacquie Faust and Southestern Oklahoma's Rachel Ingram will be the region's individual qualifiers. Faust won the individual title.

Courtney Waltbillig (23:03) and Ashley Bunch (23:20) finished 23rd and 34th. Abbey Adams and Alison Walker finished 40th and 41st just one second apart from each other. Krista Merrill was 51st at 23:47 and Kara Eckard was 59th at 24:11.

The men will prepare for the national meet to be held on November 18th at the University of West Florida in Pensacola.
