Southern Stampede set for Saturday
MSSU hosts one of the midwest’s largest meets

More than 1,500 runners will compete on Saturday (Sept. 17) at the Missouri Southern State University Cross Country Course in the 17th annual Southern Stampede.

The 2005 meet features representatives from 43 colleges and universities throughout the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Iowa and Texas. Additionally, 43 high schools from throughout the region will compete in large and small school divisions.

The action begins on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. wih the University/Open Women’s 5K. The University/Open Men’s 8K follows at 9:45 a.m.

The high school races start at 10:45 a.m. with the girls’ 5K, followed at 11:30 a.m. with the boys’ 5K.

An open fun run, at 12:15 p.m., will follow the competition.

Among the colleges and universities competing are NCAA Division I teams from the University of Arkansas, Missouri State University, Missouri-Kansas City and Oral Roberts. Missouri Southern could also get an early look at Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association teams from Pittsburg State, Southwest Baptist and Truman State (women only). Fort Hays State University, which will join the MIAA next year, will also field men’s and women’s teams in the event.

Arkansas, with four runners in the top five, won the men’s collegiate race last year. Missouri Southern finished sixth, behind four NCAA Division I teams (Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Missouri State) and Harding (Ark.), which is back in the field this year.

Oklahoma won the women’s team title in 2004, edging Arkansas by just one point. Missouri Southern came in ninth on the women’s side, just seven points back of Pittsburg State.

Missouri high school teams Eureka and East Newton swept the boys’ and girls’ titles in Divisions 1 and 2, respectively, in 2004.

The Stampede is held on the MSSU Cross Country Course, which winds its way through tree-lined grass trails in the areas adjacent to the University’s Fred G. Hughes Stadium. Unique in its design, the course finishes on the track just in front of the main grandstand inside Hughes Stadium.
