Southern Stampede cross country meet is
Saturday
Lions to host one of nation’s largest
meets
The lone
home cross country meet of the fall for the Missouri Southern
teams is coming up this Saturday (Sept. 20), as MSSU hosts the
Southern Stampede at the school’s cross country course.
More than 1,000 runners are expected for
this year’s event. In all, 29 teams are currently entered
on the women’s side and 28 on the men’s.
Nine of the teams from the Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association are scheduled to be at
the meet. Missouri-Rolla, Pittsburg State and Southwest Baptist
will have both men’s and women’s teams in the meet,
and the Truman women’s squad is also scheduled to
participate.
The Stampede field will also include NCAA
Division I schools Arkansas, Oklahoma, Southwest Missouri
State, Missouri-Kansas City and Oral Roberts. Oklahoma State is
also slated to be on hand for the men’s race.
The Missouri Southern men’s team is
ranked No. 6 in the Division II Cross Country Coaches
Association poll and No. 2 in the South Central Region. The
Southern women are ranked fourth in the South Central Region.
The day gets under way at 9 a.m. on
Saturday with the University/Open Women’s 5K. The
University/Open Men’s 8K will follow at 9:45 a.m.
Approximately 30 high school teams are
expected for the high school portion of the meet, which should
begin at approximately 10:45 a.m. with the high school girls
race. The high school boys event will follow at 11:30 a.m. To
top off the day, an open fun run (5K) will start at 12:15 p.m.
Results from the meet will be available
online shortly after the meet at www.mssu.edu/athletics or at
www.precision-timing.com. Results will also be faxed to local
media.
