Lions take home Championship with 89-83 win over UPR-Bayamon

. - The Missouri Southern basketball team went on a 10-0 run midway through the first half to erase a six point Bayamon lead, en route to an 89-83 win in the Championship game of the second annual Puerto Rico/Lexmark Holiday Tournament tonight in Carolina.

Southern (12-0) trailed 17-11 at the 13 minute mark of the first half, but a layup from Jason Adams sparked a 10-0 run that saw the Lions take a 21-17 lead with 10:48 left. The lead was 11 (34-23) after a layup from Matt Monroe with seven minutes left, but a bucket from Bayamon's (3-5) Javier Ayuso made the halftime score 44-37 in favor of the Lions.

Southern shot 62 percent from the field in the first half, including 56 percent from long range, but made just 50 percent (3-6) of its free throws. Adams scored 14 points in 10 minutes off the bench, going 6-8 from the field.

The Lions came out of the locker room storming and quickly doubled their lead to 14 (55-41) after a basket from Monroe, four minutes in. The lead was as high as 19 after a three from Adams, three minutes later. Southern's lead was 14 (85-72) after a three from Skyler Bowlin with just under five minutes left and Bayamon went on a 12-4 run to end the game, but could get only as close as six.

Mariun Price had 18 points on 7-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-4 from long range. Price was named the Tournament's MVP after averaging nearly 15 points per game in the three games. Adams had 17 off the bench, while Monroe and Webb scored 11 and 12, respectively. Webb had a career-high eight assists in the game.

Southern will now step back into MIAA play after Christmas as they travel to Bolivar for what could be Division II's game of the year up to this point as the undefeated and third ranked Southwest Baptist Bearcats play host to the undefeated and 14th ranked Lions on Monday night, December 29th at 7:30 pm.
