Joplin, Mo. - Missouri Southern trailed by 14 points with three minutes to go, but went on an 18-3 run to close the game and a jumper from Tony Webb as time ran out, gave the Lions a 71-70 win over 22nd ranked Central Missouri in front of more than 1,200 fans tonight at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (9-0, 2-0 MIAA) has equaled the program's best start, matching the mark set by the 1999-2000 squad. The win also gives Lions head coach Robert Corn 299 for his career, all with Missouri Southern.

Two free throws from Central's (5-2, 0-2 MIAA) Alex Moosmann gave the Mules a 67-53 lead with 3:08 remaining in the second half. A layup from Matt Monroe cut the lead to 12 and a three from Skyler Bowlin made the deficit nine (67-58) with 2:30 to go. Bowlin would score on two consecutive possessions to cut the lead to five (67-62) with just under two minutes left and Webb hit a running layup to make the score 67-64 with 1:43 left to go, forcing a Central Missouri timeout.

Another layup from Bowlin cut the lead to just one, but a free throw from the Mules' Sanijay Watts pushed the Central lead back to two (68-66) with just more than a minute to go. Webb then gave the Lions their first lead since the 12:28 mark of the first half when he hit a fall-away three pointer in the left corner to put Southern up 69-68 with 53 seconds left.

Central's Joe Young was fouled and made both free throws to put the Mules back in front 70-69 with 43 seconds to go. The Lions then missed four shots on their next possession and Bowlin had to foul Central's Tyler Oakley the next time down to stop the clock at six seconds. Oakley missed both free throws and Monroe grabbed the rebound and found Webb. The senior drove the length of the court, crossed over at the top of the key and nailed a fade-away jumper as the buzzer sounded to seal the Lions' amazing come back.

Bowlin led the Lions with 22 points on 7-14 shooting. Vincent Ateba had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Webb scored 10, seven coming in the final 1:43. Monroe had six points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Watts led the Mule's scoring attack with 30 points on 14-21 shooting. Joe  Young scored 18.

Coming into the game, Southern had out scored its opponents 318-186 in the paint. The Mules, however, out scored the Lions 42-26 tonight in the paint. Southern scored 24 points off of 22 Central Missouri turnovers and the Lions' bench out scored the Mules' 17-7.
